"The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy, nothing more."
Recently Pat Robertson, one of the televangelist crew that's been uttering inanity since some time in the late pre-Cambrian, crawled out from under his rock and said something about how Jesus Christ Himself has recommended that the current president of Venezuala , Hugo Chavez (a socialist), be assasinated lest the country become a threat to American security as a haven for Communists and Muslim terrorists.
Leaving aside all the *astoundingly* dumb things involved in that idea, let alone talking about it in public, couldn't he have at least picked a rational fear? Heck, the Muslim extremists hate Communists even more than they hate us, because the West is at least nominally composed of states that could be called "religious" (in that they tolerate or support religion of some form, even if it isn't Islam) vs. the overtly atheist Communist governments. If you need proof, see the past ~25 years in Afghanistan or the past ~15 in Chechnya. You'd probably find Nancy Reagan hopped up on nine kinds of designer drugs, naked and with a pacifer in her mouth at an all-night rave, before you'd find Muslim extremists working with Marxists in any capacity.
Given that Robertson is getting on in years, I have to wonder whether his statements are caused by actual senile dementia or if this is just the latest permutation in a pre-existing insanity.
(Whether or not Chavez is a good president, I'm not qualified to evaluate, and is besides the point. Calling for the assasination of political figures, foreign or domestic, is a dark road that leads to places of ill aspect. Even if your goal is to remove a person from political effectiveness, the worst way is via assasination, as you very likely turn the person into something you can never entirely suppress: a martyr. The anti-Communists should have learned that lesson from Che if nothing else.)
